Josef AlbersJosef and Anni Albers were artistic adventurers who were both pioneers of twentieth-century modernism. Josef Albers (1888-1976) was an influential teacher, writer, painter, and color theorist—now best known for the Homages to the Square he painted between 1950 and 1976 and for his innovative 1963 publication The Interaction of Color. Anni Albers (1899-1994) was a textile designer, weaver, writer, and printmaker who inspired a reconsideration of fabrics as an art form, both in their functional roles and as wallhangings.
JOSEF AND ANNI ALBERS: ART IS EVERYWHERE marks the first time the lives and art of these two influential modernists have been examined in tandem. The film chronicles Josef and Anni Albers' 51-year marriage, from their first meeting at art school in 1922 through their enduring support of each other's careers. ART IS EVERYWHERE travels from Nazi Germany to South America to New York to chart Josef and Anni's childhoods, their early years, their arrival in the U.S. in 1933 and their progressions as artists and teachers. The program includes rare footage of Josef and Anni and interviews with the Albers' fellow artists, former students and friends, including renowned architect Phillip Johnson.
