World: Cold War Armageddon" takes a close look at the last time we were threatened by the might of world superpowers: The Cold War, when each one of them was determined to reshape the world in their own image. For over forty years the entire world stood on the brink of annihilation, as the horrors of World War 2 ended and a new kind of global war began. [edit] Rise of the Superpowers
For four decades two global superpowers face off, poised for swift and terrible action, threatening to annihilate one another, with the push of a button. It is an arms race, a propaganda battle – and at times, a deadly game. It is the Cold War.
After the atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, two superpowers emerge from World War II, each with differing ideologies and increasing hostility. The USSR imposed dictatorial rule systems on many peoples in Eastern Europe. The tension between communism and capitalism increases due to ideologically motivated civil wars in Greece and China. Will the US use the atomic bomb again?
[edit] Paranoia
As the propaganda war and the arms race rage on the 1950's becomes the decade of paranoia. The stalemate between democracy and communism reaches a fever pitch as the word descends further in chaos…closer to the edge of WWIII.
In 1949, several Western European nations formed NATO, an alliance with the United States, to defend against the USSR. In the same year, the Soviet Union tests its first atomic bomb. The arms race is in full swing, and the development of the hydrogen bomb will soon follow. The resulting paranoia leads to show trials and witch hunts in the United States. Whether proxy wars like in Korea or espionage, the Cold War is starting to heat up.
[edit] Revolution
The bitter rivalry between capitalism and communism that rages from Berlin to Havana – and all the way to Outer Space. Russia seals themselves behind an Iron Curtain. A move that spawns the birth of revolutions across East Europe and beyond.
In the mid-1950s more and more military bases were built on both sides of the Iron Curtain. The Hungarians' desire for freedom is crushed by Soviet tanks. A few years later, the US got a communist country right on their doorstep with the Cuban revolution. And the struggle to conquer space begins with the launch of Sputnik, the first man-made object in space.
[edit] Nuclear Poker
The stakes are high in the 1960s: the USSR plants nuclear warheads in Cuba, the first US troops arrive in Vietnam, and Neil Armstrong becomes the first man to walk on the moon.
The Cold War heats up when the USSR deploys nuclear warheads to Cuba in 1962. The world is coming very close to a nuclear war. The first US troops arrive in Vietnam. In the Prague Spring of 1968, the idea of "socialism with a human face" was doomed to failure. Landing on the moon is a "giant leap for mankind". And in 1972, Richard Nixon became the first US President to visit communist China.
[edit] Peace and War
By the mid 1970s, the Cold War has remained a fact of life for decades. But 30 years into the war, and the doctrine of mutually assured destruction doesn't feel like a roadmap to peace. It's an arms race, a propaganda and at times, a deadly game.
Cold War tensions continued into the 1970s. There are only a few rays of hope, such as the withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam. With the test of the neutron bomb, the nuclear arms race got out of control. A civil war breaks out in Angola, arms and mercenaries pour into the country. Finally, in 1979, Jimmy Carter and Leonid Brezhnev signed a treaty limiting nuclear weapons.
[edit] Cold War 2
By the end of the 70s, war between East and West has been raging for decades. Countless proxy wars have proven how destructive this so-called Cold War can be. It's an arms race, a propaganda battle and at times a deadly game.
The West is outraged when the Soviet military invades Afghanistan. The US immediately offers arms and support to the anti-government rebels – the mujahideen. Boxer Muhammad Ali campaigned for a boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Athletes stay away from the games, but Soviet troops remain in Afghanistan for many years to come. The fear of global annihilation leads to protests.
[edit] Warmonger
In the early 1980's the next battlefield in the struggle between communism and democracy, emerges, and it's in the United State's own backyard. It's an arms race, a propaganda battle and at times a deadly game. This is the Cold War.
The US remains willing to use force to stop the spread of Communism. US President Reagan sends marines to the island of Grenada to oppose a left-wing government. In Nicaragua, the Sandinista government is fighting the US-backed Contra rebels. In 1987, Reagan announced a new weapons program, soon to be dubbed "Star Wars." Gorbachev, the new President of the USSR, wants an end to the Cold War.
[edit] Falling Dominoes
In 1989, the USSR pulls out of Afghanistan and the last remaining proxy conflict of the Cold War ends. A new era emerges as brutal barriers are broken down. A peaceful transition is what the watching world prays for, but is by no means a sure thing.
In the 1980s, the "Solidarnosc", Solidarity trade union in Poland became a beacon for the entire Eastern bloc. After 28 years, the Berlin Wall that divided Germany falls. In Romania, Ceausescu and his wife have lived like imperial rulers for decades. Their fall from grace is dramatic. Meanwhile, more and more Soviet republics are declaring themselves independent. The USSR no longer exists, the Cold War is over.
