Jacques Cousteau is television's most celebrated maker and presenter of documentaries about the underwater world. Setting the standard for such programmes for decades to come, he had a profound influence upon succeeding generations of television documentary-makers around the world. In 1985 Cousteau launched his most ambitious expedition since 1968 when he began the series "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau"-- a five-year "Rediscovery of the World" excursion that circumnavigated the globe. The journey took him to China's Yangtze River, Haiti's waters of sorrow, South America's Cape Horn and Mexico's Sea of Cortez, to name just a few. In 20 one-hour television specials premiered on Ted Turner's WTBS, Cousteau and crews aboard the revolutionary windship Alcyone and Calypso visited lands discovered centuries ago by the likes of Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. In this episode the Calypso passes through the Panama Canal on its way to the remote Marquesas in French Polynesia. The Cousteau cameras capture the beauty of the Marquesas from the highest waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere to mountain streams teeming with blue tropical fish.
