Documentary series diving into the real Narco Wars, revealing how opportunistic smugglers in the late 20th century began an illegal business that has evolved into one of the most treacherous industries in the world. Ruled by ruthless cartels, besieged by various agencies and police forces, and endured by millions of innocent citizens: this is the story behind the violent flow of narcotics that travel from Latin America into the USA. Narco Wars explores the rise of drug trafficking and the deadly violence that accompanies it through two compelling drivers: eyewitness accounts of the drug cartels' rise to power alongside gripping contemporary actuality. Featuring access to drug labs, traffickers, hitmen and arms dealers as well as key eyewitness interviews with everyone from Pablo Escobar's wife to the psychologist who profiled El Chapo and the ex-DEA agents who have risked their lives to fight the never-ending war on drugs. The Latin American Narco Wars are spiralling out of control. Despite the 1 Trillion USD spent of enforcement and the 2.5 million death toll, more illegal drugs are being produced, trafficked and consumed than ever before. Featuring interviews and action filmed with key players on both sides of the law, this 10 part series will examine the drug wars -- both past and present -- to explain why. NARCO WARS explores how opportunistic smuggling networks in Latin America turned into powerful and ruthless drug cartels with the power to destabilize and tear apart whole countries. The series combines gripping access to cartel members and the law enforcement agencies opposing them with a deep dive documentary exploration of the geo-political, social and cultural factors that led the cartels' rise. [edit] How Cocaine Came to America
In the 1970s, Colombia was a bitterly poor "failed state" in which the cocaine trade was one of the few lucrative sources of income. This is where the origins of the Medellin cartel lay. With interviews from notorious smuggler George Jung and Pablo Escobar's wife and son, this pilot episode reveals how a handful of criminals including the original "Black Widow" Griselda Blanco, daredevil Carlos Lehder and Pablo Escobar himself joined forces to form the most powerful cartel in the world, the Medellin Cartel, which pioneered the cocaine smuggling business in the '70s and '80s.
[edit] Mexico's First Cartel
Located on the Gulf of Mexico and thus in close proximity to the USA, the Mexican state of Sinaloa offered an ideal base for drug smuggling - and for the rise of the Mexican cartels. When the United States blocks off the Miami smuggling route for Colombian cocaine, an enterprising group of Mexican marijuana traffickers are ready to step in. The Guadalajara Cartel are the first criminal organization dedicated to trafficking drugs into the United States. But when a U.S. DEA officer attempts to disrupt their business, the Cartel take revenge.
[edit] The Battle for the Border
When a young Chapo Guzman tunnelled under the US border, it was just the beginning of a new cycle of competition and revenge in Mexico's drug trade. A young Sinaloan drug smuggler, El Chapo Guzman, goes to war with Mexico's first true cartel, the Arellano Felix Organization, which supplied up to 70 percent of cocaine consumed in the U.S. The war for control of this billion-dollar cocaine business in Tijuana triggers a bloody cycle for competition and revenge for control of the drug trade that will touch all of Mexico, giving birth to "narco terror."
[edit] Escobar's Empire
From cocaine tycoon in the '70s to full-blown narco terrorist by 1985, this is the story of Pablo Escobar's rise to power in Colombia. With interviews from Pablo Escobar's wife, son and photographer, this episode reveals how Pablo Escobar built a billion-dollar cocaine empire in the late '70s. When the U.S. and Colombian authorities start to get in his way, he unleashes his fury on his country's politicians and judges – culminating in his first act of narcoterrorism, prompting the violent takeover of Colombia's Supreme Court.
[edit] Escobar Goes to War
In the 80s the pressure on Pablo Escobar's Medellin Cartel grew. To maintain his power, the Colombian drug lord waged a bloody war against the authorities and the rivaling Cali cartel after their alliance falls through. Escobar's family tell the story of life as it unravelled and his reign of terror saw planes blown from the sky and politicians assassinated. Escobar fights a war on two fronts, against the authorities and his rivals, the Cali cartel. His campaign of terror sees airliners blown up and politicians assassinated, but his enemies are uniting against him. Featuring interviews with Escobar's wife and son, this episode investigates the battle against extradition to the U.S., which threatened to destroy the Colombian state.
[edit] Rise of the Narco Army
After the North American Free Trade Agreement the wealth of the Gulf Cartel skyrocketed and the cartel's leader Osiel Cardenas, along with his militaristic Zetas became public enemy number one. Drug lord Cardenas uses millions of drug dollars to bribe soldiers to desert the army to form The Zetas, the most feared cartel in Mexico's history. With heavy weapons, military discipline and a ruthlessness that shocks even most agents, this new breed of narcos takes the drugs war to a whole new level. In the face of betrayal, The Zetas make a whole town pay, sparking a manhunt to bring them down.
[edit] After Pablo
Escobar is dead. The new cocaine kings, the brothers Gilberto and Miguel Rodriguez and their Cali Cartel, specialize in corruption – even buying Colombia's presidents. The Cali Cartel rose to power in the early 1990s and took the cocaine drug trade international. They seem unstoppable until the DEA gets its hands on a mysterious cassette … Featuring the first English-speaking interview with Cali Cartel son and heir, William Rodriguez, this episode charts the rise and fall of Colombia's last big cartel.
[edit] Narco Cult
Meth kingpin Nazario Moreno, founder of the Mexican drug cartel La Familia Michoacana, turns a drug cartel into Mexico's first narco cult. To feed America's insatiable appetite for crystal meth, drug lord Moreno builds a billion-dollar empire and forms Mexico's first narco cult - the gruesome Knights Templars. Charged with militant violence and pseudo-religious beliefs, they turn Michoacan into a narco state. But their reign is threatened by the rise of a historic vigilante movement.
[edit] Chapo: Public Enemy No 1
The search for the world's most-wanted drug trafficker – El Chapo – as told by two women in Chicago whose drug-dealing husbands turned against the man who supplied nearly half of America's narcotics and the key DEA agents who finally brought him to justice. In 2016, the legendary drug lord El Chapo was caught in Mexico and extradited to the United States a year later. This episode traces the hunt for one of the most ruthless criminals of all time.
[edit] The Last Don
After the fall of the Medellin and Cali drug cartels, armed groups seized control of the cocaine trade. By the mid-1990s, Colombia plunges into chaos as communist FARC guerrillas battle far-right AUC paramilitaries. By the end of the decade, their rivalry erupts into an all-out civil war with the profits of the cocaine trade financing both sides as they battle for the soul of the nation.
