[edit] Information

By superimposing human athletics over footage of similar animal feats this Discovery Channel production cleverly draws in the viewer with a fresh approach to the wildlife documentary. The 50-minute tape divides these accomplishments into sections on running, jumping, lifting, gymnastics, and swimming as narrator Peri Gilpin compares animal and human effort.

For instance, a flea's acceleration rate is 20 times that of a rocket leaving the earth's atmosphere. Or the mandibular strength of a leaf cutter ant in a human would mean it could chomp through a redwood. While the filmmakers have fun comparing mountain goats to balance beam gymnasts and dung beetles to weightlifters, they also take a serious approach to the science of these abilities by using graphics to show skeletal movement or other special features. An inset shows how the bone structure of a cheetah allows for 23-foot strides, for instance. Another looks at Velcro-like pads on a gecko's feet accounting for its ability to cling to vertical surfaces.
