Daniel Barenboim established the East-Western Divan Orchestra with the late Palestinian writer Edward Said in order to bring together young musicians from across the political divide in the Middle East. Their hope was that music would heal and help to bring understanding and tolerance of different beliefs and cultures. The creation of the orchestra and its rehearsal, including master classes by prominent musicians such as Yo Yo Ma, along with dialogs among the young musicians on their visits to Weimar, Buchenwald, Seville, Rabat and the West Bank, are captured in the documentery "Knowledge Is The Beginning" by Paul Smaczny. The "Ramallah Concert" itself features the orchestra in a live concert, conducted by Barenboim, performing pieces by Mozart, Beethoven and Elgar, interspersed with speeches by Nabeel Shaath, Mustafa Barghouti and Mariam Said. Although his participation was crucial to the success of the project, Edward Said, who died of leukemia in New York City in 2003, did not live to see the concert. NOTE: This documentary features concert footage from the performance in Ramallah and other places. The full concert in Ramallah is available separately in the other release threads.
