The Cold Blue is a stirring tribute to the men of the Eighth Air Force, who flew deadly missions during World War II. Half of the U.S. Army Air Force's casualties during the war were suffered by the Eighth. Directed by Erik Nelson and featuring newly restored color 16mm footage and outtakes shot by Oscar-winning director William Wyler, The Cold Blue is a meditation on youth, war and trauma, and a tribute to one of the world's great filmmakers, his cameraman Harold Tannenbaum – who perished in combat while filming – and the men of the Eighth Air Force. The film chronicles the men of the 8th Air Force who flew mission after suicidal mission in the Second World War, and features interviews with nine of these surviving veterans, whose voices narrate the harrowing world that Wyler and his cameramen captured in the summer of 1943. In spring of 1943, legendary Hollywood director William Wyler and his film crew flew combat missions over Germany and strategic locations in occupied France on 8th Air Force B-17 bombers to document the fierce air battles of World War II. Over 70 years later, the footage was discovered in the vaults of the National Archives. After painstaking, shot-by-shot sound and picture 4K restoration, director Erik Nelson has constructed a new film out of the material. Nelson's team looked at 34 reels of 16mm footage from William Wyler's "The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress," poring over them for 15 hours. Footage is a succession of poignant images: very often of that piercingly blue sky – the hostile "cold blue" – in which the Memphis Belle and the other B-17s flew their missions. Wyler shot over 15 hours of footage on a series of raids with the 91st bomber group, from which he crafted his 1943 film "The Memphis Belle". From the remaining raw footage, Nelson has crafted an experience of a different kind, filtered through the spoken recollections of nine veterans, among the last survivors of the War in Europe. The footage was without sound, so Nelson not only restored it to stunning quality, but he also tracked down eight of the existing B-17 planes, flew up in them and captured the sound. The end result is an immersive and modern documentary. Vulcan Productions Inc. and Creative Differences Productions, Inc.
