Japan is often viewed as a vision of the future - after all, it's the country that invented the Karaoke.

The Orient has always exercised a hold on the Western imagination. The amazing wonders of the east have always attracted westerners - their ancient secrets, the colourful surroundings, the cultural differences and those strange artefacts we like to bring back to commemorate our trip. But these days rather than being made out of silk or Lapus Lazuli or Jade, they're made out of plastics and polymers.

This is the place where past and future collide - a fusion of what came before and what is to come. Robotic monks, virtual bonzai, Robotic Coelacanths, the Otaku and the girls who set the fashion trends, a staggering artificial beach, the first Karaoke machine, Shigeru Miyamoto, toilets that measure your body fat then contact your fridge, doctor and supermarket - they're all here. So bring it on!

Writer and cultural critic Waldemar Januszczak takes a lively lookat the latest in Japanese technological innovationand scours Japan's past for clues to the present.
